Reshaping it All - Day 34

Reshaping it All - Day 34

Posted by Darlene Schacht, Co-author of Reshaping it All

If you've ever wondered what Dr. Drew does to keep himself looking so slim and trim--look no further than this photo. My guess is that he's enjoying chapter ten every bit as much as we are! *Grin*

This chapter is about avoiding temptation, which also relates to avoiding bullies that may come our way. Bullies come in every shape and size, whether it's in the form of a person or a temptation we face. Avoid them at all costs, and be brave when you're not.

In looking at the way bullies attack us, Candace and I got to thinking about the way that temptation tries to use the same game plan in getting under our skin. And likewise we can tackle them in much the same way.
  1. Avoid them as much as possible.
  2. Resist them, and they'll eventually flee.
  3. Partner up with a buddy.
Let's look at each of these closely:

Avoid:

Looking to Job we see a little piece of scripture known as the eye covenant:
"I have made a covenant with my eyes; why then should I look upon a young woman?" ~ Job 31:1, NKJV
If this covenant helped Job overcome the lust of his flesh it can also work for you. This covenant would usher in a few changes for you such as avoiding the snack aisles you used to browse, passing by free samples without stopping to consider what they're serving today, and replying, "No, thank you." the next time someone passes a cookie or a caramel your way.

Resist:

Whenever I'm upset, I love hearing, "This too shall pass," because I know without a shadow of a doubt, that it's true. The Bible also tells us to resist the devil and he will flee from us. Whenever we resist temptation, regardless of how big or small it is, the temptation goes away after time. The problem is that we're usually more prone to instant gratification than we are to going without. Practice resisting more and more, and it will come easy after a while.

Buddy Up:

When I'm feeling blue, I like to go out for coffee with my good friend Lenise, because I know that she'll encourage me in the best way possible. Just this evening she texted to tell me that she was reading the Bible and praying for me. That type of connection is an incredible blessing for all Christians to have.

If you don't have that kind of support system, then I encourage you to seek it out. Maybe your church has a women's Bible study group, or maybe you're in a home school group that has some women you can connect with. Connecting with others helps to keep our sanity at times and remind you to stay on the path that you're walking. It's also an incredible blessing to have someone cheering you on. (Thank you, Lenise!!)
